Exclusive Lake O’Hara Day Hikes

Experience Overview

Fewer people, quieter trails, and a more meaningful experience in the mountains.

Our Lake O’Hara day hike provides access to one of the most desired alpine areas in the Canadian Rockies — defined by glacial lakes, elevated ridgelines, and rare views.

Together, we design routes across a range of levels, suited to both experienced hikers and those newer to the trail — with options to progress into more advanced alpine terrain.

With a local ACMG-certified hiking guide alongside you, the day moves with a natural rhythm through mountain terrain, with time to pause and take in the incredible landscape.

We plan and adjust the route throughout the day — considering pace, elevation, and conditions — to create a progression that feels both natural and rewarding, while maintaining a strong focus on safety in this dynamic alpine environment.

Group size are a maximum of five participants — allowing for a more attentive and refined experience throughout the day.

Route chosen together based on your desired difficulty level, what you want to see, and the current conditions.

Led with professional judgement and safety at the forefront.

Well-paced with time to stop, explore, and adjust as needed.

FAQs

If you have any questions that we have not answered here, please get in touch.

Ask a question

  • Yes. To maintain our professional standing with the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) and our national park permits, all guests are required to sign a Release of Liability Waiver.

This is a standard practice for all guided mountain adventures in Canada. You will be asked to acknowledge the waiver during the booking process, and you must sign a physical copy in person before we head into the field. You can review the [Release of Liability / Waiver of Claims] here at any time. If you have questions about the document or the nature of the risks involved in mountain travel, we are always happy to discuss them before you book.

  • Every hike is led by Jacob Downie, an ACMG-certified Hiking Guide. In addition to over a decade of guiding experience, Jacob holds an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification—the gold standard for remote medical care. We operate under a professional Emergency Response Plan (ERP) vetted annually for our National Parks business licenses.

  • Even on day hikes, we are never out of reach. We carry a professional communication suite on every outing:

    • Satellite Messaging: A Garmin InReach Mini for two-way satellite communication and 24/7 SOS capabilities.

    • VHF Radio: A professional radio programmed with dedicated Parks Canada Dispatch frequencies for direct, immediate contact with park wardens and rescue services.

    • Medical: A comprehensive WFR-level first aid kit and emergency shelters (bothy bag/tarp).

  • Most of our guided hiking tours in the Canadian Rockies last between 4–8 hours on the trail, depending on route choice, conditions, and group preferences.

  • Not necessarily. Routes can be selected for beginners through experienced hikers. We’ll talk through expectations in advance to ensure a good fit.

  • Safety is proactive. We conduct daily hazard assessments for weather, rockfall, and forest fire activity. We are strictly "Bear Aware"—we manage wildlife risks through strategic route choice, timing, and group management. Every guest receives a safety orientation at the trailhead covering wildlife protocols and the use of bear spray.

  • You’ll need a comfortable daypack, sturdy footwear, and clothing layers appropriate for variable mountain weather. A detailed packing list is provided immediately once you book. We provide group safety gear and trekking poles if needed.

  • Yes. Our private day hikes in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay National Parks are designed to be flexible. Whether you want to focus on alpine ecology, photography, or reaching a specific summit, we tailor the itinerary to your interests.
