Canadian Rockies Hiking Guide

Each mountain experience at Columbia Wild Guides is led by Jacob Downie, a local ACMG-certified hiking guide and wilderness first responder. He relies on his familiarity with the terrain, seasons, and off-the-beaten-path routes to help you safely and confidently discover a side of the Canadian Rockies most visitors never get to experience.

Led by a local, guided with care.

Our Philosophy

A more considered way to explore the Canadian Rockies.

Our hiking excursions are about truly experiencing the mountains. Days are designed to feel intentional rather than rushed or rigid, allowing space to connect with nature, with each other, and with the experience itself.

  • Small Groups for Better Experiences

We prioritize private and small-group trips that allow for flexibility, quieter routes, and time to take it all in without pressure.

  • Everything Fully Handled

From permits and transfers to meals and accommodations, the details are arranged for you, so the experience feels seamless.

  • A Focus on Safety

Each day is shaped by careful planning and conservative decision-making, with constant attention to weather, terrain, wildlife activity, and group readiness.

  • Elevated Touches in Wild Places

From locally sourced, healthy lunches and trailside espresso to attentive one-to-one communication, adventure and comfort coexist in easy balance.

Jacob Downie

Jacob Downie is the founder and lead guide of Columbia Wild Guides. His connection to the mountains began in childhood, shaped by summers spent with family in the Columbia Valley near Cranbrook, where long days of hiking and hunting helped him learn the rhythms of wild places. He now spends each spring there foraging for mushrooms.

Jacob spent several years working as a professional wilderness guide in New Zealand.

There, he developed a calm, adaptable approach to leadership in dynamic mountain environments. That international experience sharpened his judgment and reinforced the importance of preparation, flexibility, and clear decision-making—skills that continue to define his guiding style today.

Jacob is an ACMG-certified Hiking Guide and a certified Wilderness First Responder. He has spent time on iconic peaks such as Mount Assiniboine, Denali, and countless lesser-known routes throughout the Canadian Rockies.

His approach is shaped by a belief that the mountains offer their greatest lessons when approached with humility and patience.

Now based in the Bow Valley with his wife and children, Jacob’s work is rooted in a lifelong respect for wild places and a desire to help others experience them in a way that feels honest, grounding, and human.

Whether leading a single-day hike or a multi-day journey, he creates space for meaningful experiences, where people can move confidently through big landscapes, feel well supported, and leave with a deeper connection to place.

Thoughtful Design, From Trailhead to Finish

Route Selection

Your Canadian Rockies hiking guide will choose trails based on variety, scenery, conditions, and group interests. We balance iconic landmarks with hidden gems far from the crowds.

Pacing & Flexibility

Days are planned to be well-paced (challenging but achievable) with built-in flexibility to adjust for weather, energy levels, or changing conditions.

Weather & Conditions Awareness

Mountain environments change quickly. Ongoing assessment of weather, terrain, and wildlife activity informs daily decisions and adjustments.
