Reaching the glassy shores of the lake provides an exceptional vantage point to enjoy the striking contrast of brilliant yellow needles against dark evergreen forests and rugged grey rock walls. For a unique geological bonus, a short walk past the shoreline leads to the famous Elephant Rocks — a surreal collection of massive, scattered boulders nestled right within another pocket of golden larches.

A remarkably efficient route into the high alpine of Kananaskis Country, this circuit places you directly into a dramatic, limestone bowl — where the golden autumn larch trees take center stage. The trail climbs steadily from the Highwood Pass area, gaining elevation quickly through an open forest before breaking out into a magnificent, cliff-rimmed glaciated basin. Surrounded by the towering, rugged walls of Mount Arethusa and Storm Mountain, the vibrant golden canopy creates an incredible, high-contrast landscape that defines autumn in the Canadian Rockies.

Carving directly through the rugged spine of Mount Buller — Buller Pass is one of Kananaskis Country’s most visually striking and dramatic hiking destinations. A challenging backcountry trail that ascends into a windswept, high-altitude pass, it offers a much quieter alternative to the region’s heavily congested autumn hotspots. The hike begins through a starkly beautiful, regenerating burn forest — where silver, fire-weathered tree trunks stand in vivid contrast to vibrant blankets of fireweed and bright green mosses, giving the initial approach an eerie yet captivating feel.
As the trail climbs higher, the landscape dramatically transforms into a vast, rocky upper cirque where a hidden pocket of golden larches thrives beneath the towering grey limestone walls. The final, steady push up the trail brings you to the crest of the pass — where sweeping panoramic views open up across the massive Ribbon Creek Valley and down to the deep blue waters of Ribbon Lake below. In autumn, the high-alpine basin lights up with spectacular gold and orange hues — a powerful reward for dedicated hikers seeking raw, untamed mountain scenery far off the beaten path.

This pristine area is home to some of the most concentrated and spectacular stands of ancient larches in Kananaskis Country.
Once inside the rocky basin, the trail loops through a miniature world of massive limestone boulders, trickling alpine creeks, and fragile meadows, all completely hemmed in by towering grey mountain walls. In autumn, the entire cirque turns into a vibrant bowl of brilliant gold, allowing you to walk right at the tree-line and touch the soft gold needles.
